LEd 0.53 erschienen [update]
Von LEd, einem freien LaTeX-Editor für Windows-Systeme, ist die Version 0.53 veröffentlicht worden. Neu sind die Unterstützung der dvi-Betrachter sowohl für MiKTeX 2.8 als auch TeX Live 2008 und ein Wörterbuch für die niederländische Sprache, die italienische Übersetzung ist verbessert worden wie auch englische und polnische Wörterbücher, die Geschwindigkeit wurde verbessert und einige kleine Fehler sind behoben worden.

LEd 0.53 released [update]
Version 0.53 of LEd, a freeware LaTeX-Editor for Windows systems, has been released. New features are dvi viewer support for both MiKTeX 2.8 and TeX Live 2008, a Dutch (Belgium) dictionary, the Italian translations have been updated as well as English and Polish dictionaries, the performance has been improved and some small bugs have been fixed.

Overview of the dtx format
Joseph Wright has published a post giving an overview of the dtx format on his blog Some TeX Developments. It’s the first post of a small series dealing with that LaTeX package format.
match_parens: neues Tool zum Prüfen von Klammerungen
Heute erschien auf CTAN ein neues Script namens match_parens. Diese von Wybo Dekker geschriebene Programm hilft dem Anwender, die paarweise Übereinstimmung der Klammern in Dokumenten zu überprüfen, die Klammern {}[]()<> werden unterstützt.
match_parens wurde in Ruby programmiert, obwohl es auf ctan-ann als Perl-Script beschrieben wurde, daher ist eine bestehende Ruby-Umgebung notwendig. Auf Ubuntu (und Debian) Linux-Systemen kann Ruby durch
sudo apt-get install ruby
installiert werden, damit kommen die Pakete libruby1.8, ruby, ruby1.8 auf Ubuntu 9.04 zum System hinzu. Natürlich lässt sich das auch durch Synaptic auf Ubuntu erledigen. Das Script kann durch
chmod u+x match_parens
ausführbar gemacht werden. Man kann auch Option a statt u wählen, damit alle Anwender es ausführen können. Danach kann das Script mit dem Namen der zu prüfenden Datei durch
./match_parens test.tex
aufgerufen werden. Die Ausgabe des Programms zeigt dann die offenen Paarungen am linken Rand. Hier ist eine Beispiel-Ausgabe:

Noch offene Klammern kann man links sehen, sie verschwinden, nachdem sie geschlossen werden. Am Ende sieht man die noch bestehenden Klammerungs-Probleme und kann sie beheben.
Dieses kleine Tool mit seinen nur ca. 20 Ruby-Codezeilen kann besonders nützlich sein, um große TeX-Dokumente zu prüfen, wo zum Beispiel Fehler durch verschachtelte Klammerung schwer zu lokalisieren sein können.

match_parens: new tool to check parenthesis matching
The script match_parens has been uploaded to CTAN today. This program has been written by Wybo Dekker to assist the user in checking parenthesis (and braces, brackets) balancing in documents, the characters {}[]()<> are supported.
It’s written in Ruby, though it’s been announced on ctan-ann as Perl script, therefore a Ruby installation is required. On Ubuntu (and Debian) Linux systems Ruby can be installed by:
sudo apt-get install ruby
which installs libruby1.8, ruby, ruby1.8 on Ubuntu 9.04. Of course it could be done using Synaptic on Ubuntu as well. You can define the script to be executable by
chmod u+x match_parens
or use option a instead of u to allow execution by all users. Afterwards the script could by invoked with the name of the file to be checked as parameter, like
./match_parens test.tex
The output of the programm will show mismatches at the left margin. Have a look at this example:

Unmached parentheses can be seen on the left, vanishing after being matched, at the end you can see the remaining matching problems.
This small tool with its just about 20 lines of Ruby code can be useful especially in checking large TeX documents where errors for instance caused by nested braces could be hard to locate.

WinShell 3.31 Beta veröffentlicht
Die Version 3.31 Beta TeX/LaTeX-Entwicklungsumgebung WinShell wurde heute durch Ingo H. de Boer veröffentlicht. Dieser Editor läuft auf Windows-Systemen und bietet Projekt-Management, Syntax-Hervorhebung, Rechtschreibprüfung, BibTeX-Unterstützung, Unicode-Unterstützung, verschiedene Werkzeugleisten und Einstellungsmöglichkeiten.
Korrekturen und Verbesserungen hinsichtlich Version 3.30 sind:
- Update auf Scintilla 2.01,
- Verbessertes BibTeX-Frontend: deaktivieren/aktivieren,
- Verbessertes BibTeX-Projektfenster: Umschalten Autor/Label-Sicht, Alle Einträge zeigen,
- Autovervollständigung für LaTeX-Befehle und BibTeX-Label.

WinShell 3.31 Beta released
Version 3.31 Beta of the TeX/LaTeX-IDE WinShell has been released by Ingo H. de Boer today. This editor runs on Windows systems and provides project management, syntax highlighting, spell checking, BibTeX support, Unicode support, different toolbars and configuration options.
Fixes and improvements to version 3.30 are:
- Update to Scintilla 2.01,
- Improved BibTeX front-end: disable/enable,
- Improved BibTeX Project Window: toggle author/label view, show all entries,
- Autocompletion for LaTeX commands and BibTeX labels.

GuIT meeting 2009
Les than two weeks left – the GuIT meeting 2009 will be held on October 17, 2009 at Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, Italy. GuIT (Gruppo Utilizzatori Italiani di TeX) is the Italian TeX User Group, inviting to the 6th annual conference about TeX and LaTeX. Many talks will be held in Italian, only a few in English. More information including registration, program, arrival and accommodation can be found on the official conference website.

Perl 5.11 erschienen
Die Version 5.11.0 von Perl wurde nun nach mehr als zwei Jahren Entwicklung durch die Entwickler-Community veröffentlicht. 5.11.0 ist eine Entwickler-Version, zur Verfügung gestellt zum Testen und zur Entwicklung von Software für das später erscheinende Perl 5.12.
Perl ist eine interpretierte Programmiersprache und wurde ursprünglich als allgemeine Unix-Scriptsprache entwickelt. Sie ist freie Software und wurde sowohl unter die GNU General Public License als auch die Artistic License gestellt. Perl gibt es für die meisten Betriebssysteme, beispielsweise für Linux, Mac OS X und Windows. Während Perl bereits durch Linux und Unix-artige Systeme mitgebracht wird, kann es auf Windows beispielsweise mit ActivePerl genutzt werden.
Viele TeX- und LaTeX-Tools sind in Perl programmiert worden, von dessen Textverarbeitungs-Fähigkeiten und seiner allgemeinen Flexibilität profitierend, beispielsweise:
- epstopdf wandelt EPS-Grafiken in PDF-Dokumente mittels GhostScript,
- latex2html übersetzt LaTeX-Code in HTML-Dokumente,
- pdfcrop schneidet überflüssige leere Seitenränder ab,
- texcount zählt Wörter in LaTeX-Dokumenten,
- texdirflatten sammelt Dateien, die zu einem LaTeX-Projekt gehören, in einem Verzeichnis,
- texloganalyser erlaubt dem Anwender, Elemente der Log-Datei zu extrahieren und darzustellen
und viele mehr, üblicherweise auf CTAN zu finden.

Perl 5.11 now available
The release of Perl 5.11.0 has been published after more than two years of development by the community of Perl developers. The version 5.11.0 is a development release that has been made available in order to test and to develop software intended to run with Perl 5.12.
Perl is a high-level, interpreted, dynamic programming language, originally developed as a general-purpose Unix scripting language. It is free software and is licensed under both the GNU General Public License and the Artistic License. Perl is available for most operating Systems, for example Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. While Perl is already provided by Linux and Unix-like distributions it can be used on Windows for instance by installing ActivePerl.
Many TeX/LaTeX-Tools have been written in Perl, benefiting from its text processing facilities and its flexibility in general, for instance
- epstopdf converts EPS to ‘encapsulated’ PDF using GhostScript,
- latex2html translates LaTeX code into HTML documents,
- pdfcrop trims pages of any whitespace border or just of of a fixed border,
- texcount counts words in a LaTeX document,
- texdirflatten collects files related to a LaTeX job in a single directory,
- texloganalyser allows the user to extract and to display elements of the log file
and many more, usually available on CTAN.

- csv2latex – a Ruby script and Applescript combination allowing cut-and-paste of spreadsheet tables (e.g., from Excel, Open Office Calc, iWork Numbers, etc.) into a LaTeX file in various popular LaTeX table formats: plain tables, booktabs, longtable and raw cells
- memdesign – notes on book design, derived from the first part of the memoir users manual
- DoX – extensions to the doc package

Evince für Windows verfügbar
Der freie Dokumentbetrachter Evince ist nun auch für Windows-Systeme verfügbar. Das Entwicklerteam stellte eine msi Installations-Datei zusammen mit der neuen Version 2.28.0 bereit. Evince ist der Standard-pdf-Betrachter für die GNOME-Umgebung, außer pdf kann Evince auch postscript, djvu, tiff und dvi-Dokumente anzeigen. Evince ist unter LaTeX-Nutzern weit verbreitet, beispielsweise auf Ubuntu Linux, wo GNOME als Desktop-Umgebung voreingestellt ist.
