Sumatra PDF 1.1 released
The version 1.1 of the pdf viewer Sumatra PDF has been released yesterday. This viewer runs on Windows systems and is free and open source.
Besides some bug fixes the update brings a text export feature, and now Sumatra PDF automatically detects commonly used TeX editors to support inverse search.

Ubuntu 10.04 “Lucid Lynx” erschienen
Die neue Version 10.04 von Ubuntu “Lucid Lynx” ist seit gestern verfügbar. Das Design wurde überarbeitet, die Boot-Geschwindigkeit erhöht, einige neue Features sind hinzugekommen und wie üblich viele Updates.
Gute Neuigkeiten für uns TeX-Anwender: mit der neuen Version kommt TeX Live 2009, durch den Ubuntu Paketmanager installierbar. Der LaTeX-Editor Kile kommt in Version 2.1beta4, TeXmaker in 1.9.9.

Ubuntu 10.04 “Lucid Lynx” released
The new release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS “Lucid Lynx” is available since yesterday. It comes with a fresh design, faster boot speed, some new features and many updates.
Good news for us TeX users: the new version provides TeX Live 2009 installable by the Ubuntu package manager. The LaTeX editor Kile is included as version 2.1beta4, TeXmaker as 1.9.9.

More on TikZ tables
At present I don’t have much time for the blog because of my work, but I keep on reading and answering questions and comments.
For instance since I’ve noticed a link by Uwe to a table related topic and because of Oliviers comment there I’ve added another comment to “Fancy tables with TikZ“. It shows a tikz-matrix based table, seperating the actual implementation from the table contents. A simple code like
begin{mytable}{1.2cm}{2.4cm}{1.2cm}{0.6cm}{ head{Rank} & head{Distribution} & head{Hits} & \ 1 & Ubuntu & 2114 & down \ 2 & Fedora & 1451 & up \ ... 10 & Arch & 625 & down \ } end{mytable} |
produces the following output.
Changing the style of tables in the whole document is easier when they are defined as new environments in the preamble. For instance the mytable environment could be implemented without TikZ using just the standard tabular environment without changing the usage of those tables. Likewise with head – I avoid using textbf directly. It allows to change the look of the headings in a consistent way by formatting logically.

WinEdt 6 verfügbar
Version 6.0 des komfortablen und vielseitigen LaTeX-Editors WinEdt ist erschienen. WinEdt 6 läuft auf allen aktuellen Windows-Versionen: Windows 7, Vista, 2000 und XP. Der Editor kann hat eine lange Geschichte – 1993 erstmals für Windows 3.1 entwickelt unterstützt es heute die neuesten TeX-Distributionen MiKTeX 2.8 und TeX Live 2009 auf modernen Windows-Systemen. Die Benutzer-Oberfläche wurde verbessert, doch einige erwartete Features werden erst mit Version 6.1 kommen.
WinEdt ist Shareware und kann für einen Test-Zeitraum von 31 Tagen ohne Einschränkung der Funktionalität verwendet werden. Nach dieser Zeit arbeitet der Editor weiterhin, wird jedoch immer wieder Nachrichten anzeigen, die an die Registrierung erinnern.

WinEdt 6 available
Version 6.0 of the powerful LaTeX editor WinEdt has been released. WinEdt 6 is running on all non-legacy Windows versions: Windows 7, Vista, 2000 and XP. It has a long history – being developed in 1993 for Windows 3.1 it’s now supporting the latest TeX distributions MiKTeX 2.8 and TeX Live 2009 on modern Windows platforms. The interface has been improved but some awaited features like folding and unicode support will come later with version 6.1.
WinEdt is shareware and may be used for an evaluation period of 31 days with full functionality. After that trial period the editor will continue to work but issue reminding messages concerning a registration.

WinShell 3.31 veröffentlicht
Nach Release der 3.31 Beta Version der TeX/LaTeX-Entwicklungsumgebung WinShell im Oktober 2009 wurde gestern die finale Version 3.31 durch Ingo H. de Boer veröffentlicht. WinShell läuft auf Windows-Systemen und bietet Projekt-Management, Syntax-Hervorhebung, Rechtschreibprüfung, BibTeX-Unterstützung, Unicode-Unterstützung, Werkzeugleisten und viele Optionen.
Neu in 3.31 sind
- Autovervollständigung von LaTeX-Befehlen und BibTeX-Labeln,
- Update-Prüfung,
- Teilen und Verbinden von Absätzen,
- eine Option, um das BibTeX-Frontend zu aktivieren und zu deaktivieren,
- optionales Öffnen vorher offen gewesener Dateien beim Programmstart.
Weiterhin wird nun Scintilla 2.03 verwendet und das BibTeX-Projektfenster wurde verbessert.

WinShell 3.31 released
After the beta release of 3.31 in October 2009 the actual Version 3.31 of the TeX/LaTeX-IDE WinShell has been released by Ingo H. de Boer yesterday. WinShell runs on Windows systems and provides project management, syntax highlighting, spell checking, BibTeX support, Unicode support, toolbars and many options.
New features of 3.31 compared to 3.30 are
- autocompletion for LaTeX commands and BibTeX labels,
- an update checker,
- splitting and joining of paragraphs,
- an option to enable or disable the BibTeX front-end,
- optional reloading of opened files at startup.
Further it’s using Scintilla 2.03 now and the BibTeX project window has been improved.

TeXShop 2.31 veröffentlicht
Heute wurde die Version 2.31 von TeXShop veröffentlicht, einem freien und quelloffenen TeX-Editor für Mac OS X geschrieben von Richard Koch. Die neue Version benötigt mindestens System 10.4 (Tiger), jedoch ist System 10.5 (Leopard) dringend empfohlen.
Einige der Neuerungen in 2.31:
- Das “goto error” feature wurde verbessert. Nun wird der dem Fehler direkt vorangehende Text hervorgehoben (entsprechend der Angabe des TeX-Compilers) statt der gesamten Zeile, die den Fehler enthält, was die Fehlersuche vereinfacht, vor allem wenn “soft wrapping” verwendet wird.
- Der Fehler bezüglich falsch dargestellter Werkzeugleisten sowie andere bekannt gewordene Fehler sind behoben worden.
- TeXshow bringt nun eine neue SageTeX engine, die einfacher zu installieren ist und effizienter läuft.
- Das Abbrechen (“Abort”-Kommando) funktioniert nun auch, wenn ConTeXt aufgerufen wird. Dieser Fehler vorangehender Versionen konnte behoben werden, indem bash statt tcsh als Scriptsprache für das interne Aufrufscript verwendet wurde.
- Das Übersetzen kann nun durch einen neuen Menüpunkt “Abort Typesetting” abgebrochen werden, ein Tastenkürzel dafür gibt es auch.
- Schließen des Vorschau-Fensters schließt nun auch die pdf-Datei. Frühere Versionen erforderten dafür das Schließen des gesamten Dokuments oder gar das Beenden von TeXShop selbst.
- Hilfe-Bereiche, latexmk und die französische Lokalisierung wurden leicht verbessert.
- Die defekte KeyEquivalents.plist Datei wurde repariert.

TeXShop 2.31 released
Today version 2.31 of TeXShop has been released. TeXShop is a free and open source TeX editor and previewer for Mac OS X written by Richard Koch. The new version requires at least System 10.4 (Tiger) but System 10.5 (Leopard) is strongly recommended.
Some of the changes in 2.31:
- The “goto error” feature has been improved. Now it’s highlighting the text right before the error (like reported by the TeX compiler) instead of an entire line containing the error making it easier to spot errors, especially when “soft wrapping” is used.
- The bug concerning the incorrectly drawn toolbar has been fixed as well as other known bugs.
- TeXshow now comes with a new SageTeX engine that’s easier to install and more efficient.
- Now the “Abort” command works also when ConTeXt is called. That bug of the previous version was fixed by using bash instead of tcsh as scripting language for the internal calling script.
- The typesetting can be canceled by a new menu item “Abort Typesetting”, a keyboard shortcut is provided too.
- Closing the preview window now closes also the pdf file. In previous versions closing the entire document or even quitting TeXshop itself had been necessary for it.
- Help sections, latexmk and French localization were slightly improved.
- The defective default KeyEquivalents.plist has been repaired.

Neue Version des Geometry-Paketes
Hideo Umeki hat die Version 5.1 des Paketes geometry veröffentlicht. Während 5.1 nur eine Fehlerbereinigung für die pass-Option enthält, bringt die Version 5, wenige Tage zuvor am 12. Februar veröffentlicht, etliche neue und sehr nützliche Features:
- Das Seitenlayout kann nun sogar inmitten des Dokuments geändert werden. Diese Fähigkeit wurde sehr oft erfragt und bislang durch das gmeometric-Paket bereitgestellt. Nun kann man newgeometry{…} ähnlich zu geometry schreiben, wobei jedoch alle geometry-Einstellungen der Präambel deaktiviert werden wie ebenfalls die Papier-Größen-bezogenen Optionen wie paper=a4paper, landscape, portrait etc. Diese Präambel-Einstellungen können durch restoregeometry wiederhergestellt werden.
- Die aktuellen Seiten-Dimensionen können mittels savegeometry gespeichert und durch loadgeometry geladen werden.
- Es gibt neue Optionen, um das Layout-Gebiet festzulegen: layout, layoutsize, layoutwidth, layoutheight etc. Damit lässt sich ein angegebenes Layout auf Papier von anderer Größe verwenden. Beispielsweise würde das geometry-Paket A5-Layout für die Randberechnung benutzen, jedoch mit der Papiergröße A4, wenn man a4paper zusammen mit layout=a5paper verwendet.
- Die neue Treiber-Option xetex wurde hinzugefügt und ist für XeLaTeX sehr empfohlen. Die automatische Treiber-Erkennung wurde verbessert, der workaround mit geometry.cfg in TeX Live ist nun nicht mehr nötig.
- Für die JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) B-Serie wurden Papiergrößen-Voreinstellungen b0j bis b6j aufgenommen.
- Wenn der Rand nicht vollständig spezifiziert wurde, verhält sich die Version 5 nun anders als die Vorgängerversionen, um die fehlenden Ränder auszurechnen, beschrieben im Handbuch.
- Die Option showframe lässt die Seiten-Rahmen nun auf jeder Seite anzeigen.
- Die neue Option showcrop druckt Schnittmarken auf jede Seite, entsprechend den Layout-Ecken.
- Das Laden von geometry.cfg passiert nun vor der Verarbeitung der Klassenoptionen im Gegensatz zu den früheren Versionen.
- Die Optionen compat2 und twosideshift sind nun entfernt worden, da Version 5 nicht mehr zu den älteren Versionen kompatibel ist.

Geometry package updated
Hideo Umeki has published the version 5.1 of the geometry package. 5.1 brings just a bugfix for the pass option, but the version 5, released a few days earlier on Feb 12th, provides some new and very useful features:
- The page dimensions can be changed now even in the middle of a document. This very often requested feature has been provided by the gmeometric package before. Now you could write newgeometry{…} similar to geometry except that all geometry options used in the preamble would be disabled and the paper-size options like paper=a4paper, landscape, portrait etc. too. Those preamble settings can be restored by restoregeometry.
- The current page dimensions can be saved by savegeometry and loaded by loadgeometry.
- There’s a new set of options to specify the layout area: layout, layoutsize, layoutwidth,
layoutheight etc. They help to print the specified layout to paper of a different size. For example the geometry package would use A5 layout for calculation of margins but with the paper size A4 if you use a4paper together with layout=a5paper. - The new driver option xetex has been added and is strongly recommended with XeLaTeX. The driver auto-detection routine has been improved, the workaround with geometry.cfg in TeX Live is no longer necessary.
- Papersize presets b0j to b6j for JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) B-series have been added.
- If the margin would not be completely specified version 5 behaves differently now in order to determine the unspecified margin, documented in the manual.
- The option showframe will cause the page frames to be shown on every page.
- The new option showcrop would print cropmarks showing the corners of the layout on every page.
- Loading geometry.cfg precedes now the processing of the class options in contrary to the previous versions.
- The options compat2 and twosideshift have been removed because version 5 is no longer compatible with previous versions.
